Acute versus Chronic Pain

Pain generally falls into two categories – acute and chronic. Acute pain is short-term pain, typically associated with an injury such as torn ligament, muscle sprain, tendonitis, or fracture. Acute pain is expected to go away as the body heals.

Chronic pain is long-term pain, and is typically associated with an ongoing disease process like arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuromuscular disorders, or cancer. Musculoskeletal abnormalities can also lead to chronic pain if left untreated.

Treating pain conditions starts by identifying the root cause. Pain is the symptom that tells you something is wrong. If you treat the pain without addressing the cause, the pain will not resolve. This is why pain medications alone do not work for long-term pain relief. The alternative is to take an interventional approach, where we can reduce or even eliminate pain without oral pain medication. An injection of anti-inflammatory medication, for example, may provide substantial relief for several months.
